Accessibility
This site is meant to be read by anyone: on a keyboard, with a screen reader, zoomed in, or with motion switched off. Here is what has been checked, what has not, and how to tell me when it fails you.
The standard
The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. It has been checked while it was built. It has not been audited by anyone independent.
What has been checked
- Keyboard. Every link, button and form field can be reached and used with a keyboard, and a visible ring marks where you are. Every page opens with a link that skips straight to its content.
- Motion. The site moves a good deal. All of that movement stops when your device is set to reduce motion.
- Reading. Ink on paper, at a contrast of 18 to 1. Headings come in reading order for a screen reader. Photographs that carry meaning are described. Decorative ones are hidden from screen readers so they do not interrupt.
- Size. Text holds at 200% zoom. Pages are checked from 320 to 2560 pixels wide with nothing scrolling sideways. Touch targets are at least 44 pixels.
- Without the extras. The forms work with JavaScript switched off. The pages still read if the typefaces are blocked.
- Printing. Essays and the free instruments print cleanly to paper or PDF.
Where it falls short
- Very short windows. In a browser window under about 560 pixels tall, or on a phone held sideways, the front page's cover can run past the bottom of the screen.
- The photographs on the essays are generated images, and each is captioned as one.
